Second post in a row that focuses on a special time in my past. This time it’s skateboarding. Basically lived on a skateboard for the large majority of my youth. Hard not to living here in San Diego. The Powell-Peralta brand and team catapulted skateboarding into the global spotlight back in the 80′s. A new documentary from founder Stacy Peralta made it’s way to the Sundance festival this year called “Bones Brigade: An Autobiography.” It’s a continuation of sorts of his last feature, “Dogtown and Z-Boys” from 2001. Bones Brigade members Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain and Rodney Mullen all make an appearance. Looking forward to this.
Drum and bass will always have a special place in my heart. One of it’s legendary producers, Goldie, has captured the spirit of the epic UK bass records I spent hours in record shops digging through back in the day. His reinterpretation of Joker‘s latest release, whom himself is a key part of the recent resurgence of UK bass music, gave me goose-bumps. Dark and emotional. Buy it now on Beatport along with another remix by another UK producer we’ve showcased here before, Rustie.
Plenty of M.I.A. to go around this week. First, the news that she’ll be performing on stage with Madonna at the Super Bowl this weekend and now the release of her new video for “Bad Boys.” This video acts as a promo for her forthcoming new album due in the summer. Brilliant director Romain Gavras shot the clip in the Moroccan desert. It features some impressive automotive trickery by some local drivers. Including cars driving at a tilt on two wheels while M.I.A. sits atop the vehicle. Next level stuff. The Danja-produced track melds well with the visual via it’s thick Middle Eastern vibe. Interested to see what else she has in store for us this year.
After a slew of production work for various mega pop stars such as Madonna and The Killers, as well as collecting a Grammy Award along the way, Stuart Prices is getting back to his roots. A return to DJing and producing dance music for himself as Jacques Lu Cont. The man of many guises (Les Rythmes Digitales, Thin White Duke, Paperfaces and Man With Guitar to name a few) previewed a new track called “Reload” in December of last year and now blesses us with “Church.” Pete Tong premiered the tune on his show this past weekend which set the music blogs buzzing. Now we have a full high quality stream for you here. No word on an official release date but we’ll keep you posted.
Have Lunch With The Sartorialist And 25 Of His Most Stylish Friends
Photographer Scott Schuman’s stream of street style photography published under the guise of “The Sartorialist” has become a top destination for menswear lovers. Last year Schuman dreamed up the “Lunch for 25″ concept while sitting at a small Trattoria in Florence with a colleague. The plan was to reach the gentlemen whom he’d featured on the site over the years and invite them to enjoy drinks, conversation, and food under the same roof. A summit of style. It was the least he could do considering the imagery he’d captured over the years that had garnered his blog so much attention, wouldn’t have been possible without this diverse group. Flash forward to 2012 and here’s a video showcasing of the first of what is to be a series of similar events. Whether or not you happen to be a menswear guru (of which I am definitely not) it’s interesting to see diversity of style and camaraderie between these guys from around the world. And yes, Kanye was there. Of course.

AKAI Introduces MPC FLY For iPad 2
I don’t have any concrete stats to share, but AraabMUZIK has inspired a renewed love for the MPC. The wealth of YouTube videos of this guy embedded and shared all over the web showcase how flexible and fun this staple of music production can be. It was only a matter of time before a tablet integration made its way to the market. AKAI has done just that with it’s MPC FLY. It’s the first MPC designed specifically for the iPad 2. The MPC FLY has all the standard bells and whistles that you’d expect from and MPC (sequencing, built in effects, library of samples, sampling, etc.) but also gives you the ability to record and instantly share to Soundcloud, Facebook, or Twitter. The fitted compartment for your iPad makes for easy use where ever you go. Looking forward to getting my hands on one of these soon.
