Droppin some knowledge here. Documentary by the BBC that talks through the origination and progression of house music. All of the godfathers of house and techno are interviewed to speak to their experiences and perspectives on the rise of the genre and its universal cultural implications. Highly recommended!

Artist of the Year: Dave Taylor (Switch)

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

davetaylor460.jpg

A close runner up behind Timbo last year, Dave Taylor AKA “Rave Jesus” (cleverly coined by Nick Catchdubs) takes the nod in 07′. His production and remix work continues to push electronic music into uncharted territory. Already having done a track for the likes of Britney Spears (didn’t materialize) and rumored to be spending time in the studio with Missy Elliot, his name is no longer just the fodder of music blogs and DJ circles. This past year also saw him co-produce M.I.A.’s critically acclaimed album “Kala” with fellow musicologist Diplo. He has been spending a lot of time in Los Angeles over recent months working on Tricky’s new record and plans to move there in the new year. (Dave, come to San Diego!) Keep an eye out for Swedish rapper and singer Mapei who Switch produced recently as well as a full length album of Switch/Solid Groove material at some point.

Remix work in 07′:

Basement Jaxx - “Hey U”
The Black Ghosts - “Face”
P. Diddy - “Tell Me”
Freeform Five - “No More Conversations”
Just Jack - “Glory Days” *
DJ Mehdi - “I Am Somebody”
Mika - “Love Today” *
Nine Inch Nails - “Capital G”
Simian Mobile Disco - “I Believe” *
Speaker Junk - “Foxxy”
Ben Westbeech - “Dance with Me”
Robbie Williams - “Never Touch That Switch”
Jacknife Lee - “Making Me Money”
Brick n Lace - “Never Never”

Here is something new and something old in honor of Mr. Taylor:

Armand Van Helden - Je Taime (Switch Remix)

Mutiny - Dem Girls (Solid Groove Remix)

Beautiful 2-Step remix by Wideboys. Feeling the guitar in this one.

T2 ft. Jodie Aysha - Heartbroken (Wideboys London Mix)

More of a mash-up than a proper remix but good none the less. We love the Solid Groove remix of “Pat Pong” on its own but this acappella from Pitbull, Jackie-O, and Trina fits nicely on top of it. Well done Dave Nada.

Soulwax. Daft Punk. Robot Rock. Nuff said.

The good folks over at Fabric gave us a heads up on the next installment of their mix CD series. This time M.A.N.D.Y is on tap.

Throughout the 25 tracks, M.A.N.D.Y. tenderly tells a story that swells between moments of poetic ache and voracious hunger. Spanned on by deep, ethereal techno, glitchy staccato and bass-heavy machine funk, the tracks sparkle alongside eachother with brilliant elegance, breeding standout moments from Gui Boratto, Lucio Aquilina, Audion and the cream of the Get Physical crop. A thrilling portrayal of M.A.N.D.Y.’s sound, the effervescent mix moves in directions most unexpected, and grooves in ways previously unimagined.

Before they were robots and in between Daft Punk records, both Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Man ran their own respective indie labels. The slew of hits on the Roule and Cydamoure imprints had us french house junkies in the shops constantly back in the mid to late 90’s. Tunes such as “Paris by Night” set the stage for what Kavinsky does today. “Together” is an integral part of the incredible encore in the Alive 2007 show. “Music Sounds Better With You” could arguably be one of the greatest dance tunes of all time. All coming out of the Roule camp. We are keeping our fingers crossed that Bangalter revives this label next year now that the Daft tour is coming to an end. Word on the street is that he and DJ Falcon are already working on some music that they plan to release eventually.

4 minutes of pure french goodness…

Thomas Bangalter - Club Soda

This short documentary of the “Together” tour really brings you back to that time. Cassius, Bangalter, Guy-Man, DJ Falcon, and a young Busy P.
