Music: Director So Me Captures The Rhythms Of Dance Hall Culture For Major Lazer’s “Get Free”

The Major Lazer project spawned by producer/DJs Diplo and Switch has become quite the cultural phenomenon. Although Dave “Switch” Taylor has faded into the background for one reason or another, Diplo has surely embraced the spotlight. Executive producer duties on the new Snoop Lion reggae project certainly wouldn’t have happened without Major Lazer.

The group’s second LP “Free The Universe” is due via Diplo’s Mad Decent in the fall with a slew of high profile guest vocalists including Bruno Mars, Wyclef Jean, Tyga, and….Shaggy? A few months back a preview of a surprisingly understated track from the LP called “Get Free” featuring Dirty Projectors’ Amber Coffman hit the web. Parisian artist, director, graphic designer and Ed Banger Records’ art director So Me was recruited to provide a supporting visual that captured life in Jamaica and the dance hall culture that is so prevalent in the Major Lazer sound. Mission accomplished! What you will see below is a stunning vision into the rhythms of life in Jamaica. Gotta say, I am really digging the softer side of Diplo’s sound (i.e. Usher’s “Climax“). Enjoy.
