Azealia Banks‘ “Liquorice” is one of a select few successful hip hop/dance music executions this year. Usher’s collabo with Diplo for “Climax” being one of those exceptions. Got a first listen to this back in December of last year and was blown away by production by Manchester-based producer Matt Cutler (otherwise known as Lone). His house, techno, and rave influenced sound is best showcased in the highly regarded album “Galaxy Garden” released a couple of months ago.
Although Banks’ performance is great, the overall concept for the visual doesn’t work for me personally. Dropping her into a sort of modern western isn’t incredibly relevant to the feeling you get from the track. The music is absolutely solid and there’s a lot of buzz around this one. So much so that ‘Azealia Banks’ quickly became a trending topic on Twitter shortly after the video hit the web. Be sure to check out her debut EP entitled “1991” for more.
