As a follow up to our party in December featuring The Phantom’s Revenge, I am pleased to announce that J Paul Getto will be making the trip to San Diego for the next installment of our Social Club parties on January 28th at Onyx Room!
If you love quality house music, this is not to be missed! RSVP NOW for no cover before 10:30pm.
Tony Saputo (Italy) and Maurice Tamraz (California) are J Paul Getto. Individually, each of these guys are tenured producers. J Paul Getto was formed in September 2010 with the help of Neil Petricone (X-Mix Productions) and they’ve been breaking ladies’ hearts ever since. They have released some of today’s highest quality disco-house tunes, expertly sampling classic disco and creating records that are as much to be felt as they are to be heard.
The boys were kind enough to sit down to answer some questions about the J Paul Getto project and it’s influences.
What’s the story behind the name “J Paul Getto”?
The name was given to us because of the circumstances that were at hand. We would joke around about how poor we are and would mock J Paul Getty’s wealth. Our friend Neil said, “except you are J Paul Getto.” Long story short.
How did you guys get together for this project?
We have known each other for a long time. We just needed the right hand to steer us in the right direction. Actually Maurice was on a dating service and that’s how we found each other. Haha!
What are your top 5 house records and why?
Every track has its own place and time. It is kind of difficult to put 5 into a category. We will try to do our best.
1. Armand Van Helden Feat. Common – Full Moon (If you listen to it, you will know why…)
2. Todd Terry – Keep on Jumpin (Its Todd, this track is timeless!)
3. Scott Grooves – Mothership Reconnection (Daft Punk Remix) (Solid warm funky baseline. Gets any party going.)
4. M&S – Salsoul Nugget (Hit. Whether it is played out or not, this thing is the jam.)
5. Michael Jackson – Baby Be Mine (Its a deep house song. So good.)
If you were to put together a dream lineup what would it be?
Depends on the occasion…
Skrillex, Tiesto, Avicii, Steve Aoki, Enrique Iglesias, Lil Jon, LMFAO, Black Eyed Peas, John Mayer
OR
Cerrone, Gamble and Huff, Michael Jackson, Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, Thelonius Monk
OR
Daft Punk, Stuart Price, Coldplay, Muse, Rick Astley
Tell us about the J Paul Getto sound and the influences behind it.
Influences go so deep for J Paul Getto. We both come from different backgrounds, but the same. Tony loved Hip-Hop growing up. I loved it but wasn’t allowed to listen to it. So naturally I was only allowed to listen to music that didn’t involve people rapping, but I got away with Hip-House.
We both come from an interest in sampling old records. Since Tony was into the Hip-Hop thing, it was all sampling. I heard original songs and wanted to flip the sample. Simply put, the JPG sound is an eclectic version of things we Like. That includes music, women, food, etc.. For all those things, you need to dig to find a gem.
One of our biggest influences by far is Armand Van Helden and he calls it “It’s the art of knowing.”
Tell us about the production process behind the J Paul Getto records.
This is an interesting question. It’s never the same, we could be at the market and hear something and want to sample it. It is not likely that we sit with an idea and just make a track. If you feel it, it is more than likely we were just in the zone and the track fit in perfectly. Sometimes a track will take a few hours to make and some takes days or weeks.
What is your favorite J Paul Getto production or remix and why?
Thats a tough one. We would say the remix we did for Alec Carlsson. It has the old school feel yet the warm French sound we love. Alec killed it in the first place with his version!
Give us your thoughts on the resurgence of the disco house sound.
Everything comes in waves but it all comes back to House music. Styles and trends come and go but House is always here.
Who are some producers we should be keeping our eyes on in 2012?
Keep an eye out for those that have been here since the beginning. There is some crazy heat coming from the old school cats. Don’t believe the hype! But aside from them we think DJ Dan, DJ Mes, Jay Vegas, Pat Lok, Geisha Twins, Go Go Bizkitt!, Alec Carlsson, and Louis La Roche will all have a great year. We know most of them and we know they are busy working every day!
What are some tunes that are in heavy rotation in your playlist right now?
- Luca Agnelli – Desire (that one is killing it!)
- Mendo Feat Andre Butano – Gringo
- Todd Terry & J Paul Getto – Go Bitch
- Alec Carlsson – Paris Fried Chicken (J Paul Getto Remix)
- Jay Vegas – So Saxy
- DJ Mes – Love Affair
- DJ Dan – Work That Sucka/Whores Play
J Paul Getto have released a few new records recently. Give them a listen to prepare your body, mind, and soul for their appearance on January 28th! RSVP NOW for no cover before 10:30pm.
